Increasing root biomass derived carbon input to agricultural soils by genotype selection – a review

چکیده
Abstract Background and aims Soil carbon sequestration can play an important role in mitigating climate change. Higher organic C inputs to agricultural soils are needed order increase soil (SOC) stocks. Genotype selection breeding towards increased root biomass may enhance the could therefore be a promising, easy-to-implement management option for potentially increasing sequestration. However, compromise yield, which is not desirable terms of food security. Methods Data from 13 global studies with field experiments were compiled estimate potential optimised genotype enhancing without compromising yield winter wheat, spring silage maize, rapeseed sunflower. A lack data on effect variety rhizodeposition was identified thus had excluded. Results Systematic mean yields by 52% 22% across all crops sites. median 6.7% 6.8% rapeseed, 12.2% 21.6% wheat 26.4% sunflower would possible reduction. Conclusion Overall, this review demonstrates that win-win input while maintaining or even yield.

Stability of biomass-derived black carbon in soils
Black carbon (BC) may play an important role in the global C budget, due to its potential to act as a significant sink of atmospheric CO2. In order to fully evaluate the influence of BC on the global C cycle, an understanding of the stability of BC is required. The biochemical stability of BC was assessed in a chronosequence of high-BC-containing Anthrosols from the central Amazon, Brazil, usin...
متن کاملCarbon Sequestration in Agricultural Soils
Although it is common to alternate between till and no-till practices, past research has considered farmers’ tillage options to be limited to the dichotomous choice of whether or not to switch to a long-term no-till regime. This paper expands farmers’ options and models their choices of tillage frequency. Less frequent tilling sequesters more carbon but permits a greater accumulation of weeds, ...
متن کاملIrrigation Increases Inorganic Carbon in Agricultural Soils
Inorganic C reactions are among the most important chemical reactions that occur in irrigated soils and may contribute to the total amount of C sequestered in those soils. Because CO2 can escape from soils to the atmosphere or return to precipitate carbonate minerals, soils are open systems with regard to inorganic C. We measured inorganic and organic C stored in southern Idaho soils having lon...
متن کاملMicrobial respiration, but not biomass, responded linearly to increasing light fraction organic matter input: Consequences for carbon sequestration
Rebuilding 'lost' soil carbon (C) is a priority in mitigating climate change and underpinning key soil functions that support ecosystem services. Microorganisms determine if fresh C input is converted into stable soil organic matter (SOM) or lost as CO2. Here we quantified if microbial biomass and respiration responded positively to addition of light fraction organic matter (LFOM, representing ...
متن کاملEstimation of Microbial Biomass Carbon and Nitrogen in Bangladesh Soils
In order to estimate the microbial biomass content and to quantify the amount of available plant nutrients derived from microbial biornass in Bangladesh soils, biomass-C, -N, and available-N eoptents using samples from 8 soils were measured by applying the chloroform fumigation and drying-rewetting methods, respectively. 1)
